Tennis - Young and Old

The new Tennis album is better than Cape Dory. The 2010 release was great and came with a slew of other similar 60ish beach style guitar bands (which I enjoy), but with "Young and Old" its seems the duo made a conscious effort to open things up while maintaining their nostalgic, airy roots. The first track on Young and Old "All feels the Same" is one of the bands first ever written songs but has transformed into a powerful opener that sets the tone of the bands looser feel. When you hit play the first 1:45 starts off right where Cape Dory left off, but the song becomes much more aggressive and its perfect. The second song "Origins" is the single for Young and Old and many have been enjoying this release for several months now. Another interesting song that could potentially be heard at da clubs this summer is track 5, "Petition". Definitely a great pop song and another slight change for Tennis. Okay, so without further ado..here comes my play on words joke:

"I LOVE this album!"

I haven't done this in a while for no reason at all. So, Im gonna to try and get it back up and running with music I like and appreciate. I also wanted to try and link up with Spotify as this appears to be a good way to listen / share music in a easy and truly legal way.

Country Mice released their first full length album just a few short weeks ago and the reception has been very positive. While sitting under the stars during a warm summer night there are smells of bbq, pipe smoke and beer in the air, this album blends with these things perfectly.

It's an album that any true music fan is sure to enjoy whether you're in the thick of it in Brooklyn or in the middle of a wheat field in Western Kansas. This is something that's not easy for any album or band to accomplish, but for Jason, Ben, Kurt and Mike it appears effortless. Country Mice and Jason puts so much heart into these songs that it bleeds through the speakers. Buy the album, see them on tour this summer. You will walk away smiling.

I just got my paws on this album and I'm currently trying to soak it in. I have heard some negative / so so reviews (some even pertaining to this song). I heard this song yesterday on the radio (NPR / WBEZ) and I really really liked what I heard. That's one positive.

The Nerves

The Nerves are a band that were not together for very long at all. I was familiar with the name of the group and had heard that even with their short tenure as a band they were very talented and had also heard they were influential in many respects. It wasn't until this week that I discovered these claims for myself. The group was comprised of Peter Case, Jack Lee and Paul Collins (Paul Collins Beat).

This group initially only released 4 songs and then a second release of The Breakaways, this as an album of post-Nerves recordings made by Paul Collins and Peter Case prior to the formation of Collins' group The Beat.

Its poppy, a little reminiscent of The Jam or some of the other pop / punk bands from the late 70s early 80s. Despite lumping them into a giant pool like this...I think The Nerves were maybe a few years ahead of their time. Either way, all four of these songs are fun, timeless, and I'm glad I found them.

We Are Country Mice released a great new song, and it blows the mind.

Look for the Cassette Tape titled: "Transmissions" Coming soon.

I love everything about this new track, the music itself and the lyrics. Its perfect for the peak of summer and it continues to build upon the two (2) very solid EP's previously released by We Are Country Mice.

Every time I listen I cant help but hear and make references to Neil Young, which is not an easy comparison by any sort. Can not wait for the full length album and the tour by WACM.

It's been weeks since I've posted, but something very nice has been happening within in that gap. Spring is here and that makes me smile. Spring is the transition in-between Winter and Summer, when its starting to warm, but there is still that fresh crisp air in the mornings and evenings. The days are getting longer and its a nice reminder of how much we can get done with a little more sunlight in our lives.

I'm getting sappy here, but not only is Spring a time for flowers and grass to renew, but I think personally its a time when we all renew. Spring does something to people, something positive.

Okay, wipe those tears of joy away, lets get to meat of the sandwich. Below are a few springish types of songs and most are pretty current, however the Black Angels is several years old, but its something I just rediscovered and I cant stop listening to their album (Passover). Shout out Jason (Reug dog) for the heads up on the Dum Dum girls. This album is great and I love this song.

Field Music, who have been on hiatus since 2007 released a 3rd album last Tuesday, titled "Measure". So far it’s easily a stand up triple. Another perfect example of a "Stand Up Double" is the video of Kurtis Sanchez below...yep, its the game where Oak Grove DOMINATED Laguna. Never gets old seeing Laguna go down to OG.

Anyway, my point is that this album is really good. Its 20 tracks, 70 minutes and its quirky. Quirky in a good way, but difficult to describe. One song may start with beautiful spacey piano and end with complex percussion and string arrangements. So, I keep landing on quirky as a description. So many excellent tracks too, the Brewis brothers could have seperated this into two seperate excellent albums. Throughout the album I hear flashes of Beta Band, pinches of Super Furry Animals, and even a sliver Steely Dan on occaison. Field Music + Sanchez = Field of Dreams

After dropping out of college in New York and interning at FADER, Bethany Cosentino wanted to focus her efforts on music and move back to a more mellow and relaxed environment – fucking Los Angeles. After returning to her home state, Bethany joined up with old-time friend and former babysitter, Bob Bruno, to start the lo-fi, garage rock band, Best Coast. Tracks like “Sun Was High (So Was I)” and “When I’m With You” incorporate enough noise and heartbreak, love melodies to make you think the Vivian Girls and Camera Obscura had a one-time love affair. You can’t deny the classic, West coast pop sound and enchanting melodies sung by Cosentino. Definitely a group to watch out for in the upcoming summer festival circuit.

This is not new, but I really wanted to put a few words down about Kurt Vile. His 2009 album "Childish Prodigy" got a lot of well deserved attention. I need to give it multiple listens still, but I definitely appreciate it more than I did two months ago. That being said, I still catch myself listening to many songs from 2008 "Constant Hitmaker" on repeat, it's such a great album and I wish I would've found it much, much sooner. So, what can you say about Vile besides the fact that his love for Philadelphia (mainly cheese steaks) could rival John Kruk's? Well, to use a beaten to death cliche...his music is very much indie Americana, its right up there with Apple Pie, The Dallas Cowboys, and Bald Eagles- all of these things would need to be wearing thick glasses and some dark skinny jeans....because, you know. Nevermind, trust me it works. Listening to his solo albums its easy to hear how his music could be likened to that of Springsteen, Tom Petty, Seger and often Dylan....and then can lead to thoughts of Traveling Wilbury's. These similarities are in his guitar play, his understated vocals, but mainly the rawness of these things melding together, kind of like a Philly cheese steak.

Eat your heart out John Kruk.

The duo known as Phantogram will be releasing an album on Feb. 9th titled "Eyelid Movies" (available from Barsuk). I got to be honest, never heard of this guy / girl combo before today, but I'm really interested. It sounds like more than just two folks creating these sounds.

The band begins a east coast tour this week and they will also playing a few Midwest dates. You can listen to the ENTIRE record from NPR all week. Listen Here.

Yeasayer has been getting a lot of press since December when their album, Odd Blood, was leaked. the songs I heard streaming were cool and I liked them. However, I heard “O.N.E” over the weekend and I haven’t stopped doing the mamba ever since. It’s starting to get uncomfortable in the work place too. Seriously, you try telling your co-workers and boss you can’t stop doing the mamba at your desk because of a song that’s stuck in your head. Give it a listen and see what I mean (you can also download O.N.E. from Yeasayer website)…and also buy the album when it’s released next Tuesday (February 8th)

For those that laughed at the mamba joke there is a bonus song below titled- “Ambling Alp” which had been floating around the elusive blogosphere for a while. Listen to it as well.

Phoenix (Acoustic)

Phoenix released several acoustic tracks from a recent live performance for German magazine Musikexpress. Some pretty interesting sounds are brought to life when these songs are performed unplugged and at first it was a little hard to get used to for the first minute or so, but now I'm liking it. It just shows these four guys are good in any format. There are three songs below and one is a cover (a Bob Dylan Cover in fact) compliments of Pitchfork. I've got to say, its a very good cover....only about half as long as the actual Dylan song, but I think it still keeps the integrity of the song in place. The second song is from their 2009 hit album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix , which was one of my favorites albums of 2009 and it's also up for a Grammy tonight. The final song is from Phoenix's 2006 album It's Never Been Like that which is also a very, very good record.

Take a listen below and lets hope they take a grammy back home to France. Eh hau hua hua (that's my typed version of a really good French impersonation..) Okay, Au revoir.

I've been a casual listener of Beach House over the last few years, but never loved them or heavily anticipated an album by this band. My anticipation level has now changed. I liked Norway their single released late '09, but what did it for me was seeing them on Jimmy Fallon last night where they performed "Zebra" and it caused a spark in my anticipation meter I speak of. That is not meant to sound dirty. Anyway, I listened to this track multiple times this morning and now I am heavily anticipating this full length album.

"Teen Dream" will be released this Tuesday, 1/26/10.

The Local Natives out of Los Angeles are a band I've been listening to a lot lately. They're a five piece band that is extremely vocal heavy, but they're also a very beat heavy band which are things I love oh so much. The Local Natives will be making an even bigger name for themselves in 2010, its a guarantee.

Gorilla Manor (album) has been released in UK but will be available in the US around Feb. 16th. Mark the calendars and hide the air mics / bongos.

Jay Reatard- RIP

Everyone who was a fan is well aware, very sad day last week (Jan 13th). I think cause of death is still undetermined, but had heard it was being investigated as a homicide. Either way, its sad. I'm late, but I wanted to go ahead and post favorites albums / songs of 2010.

I think 2009 was a good year for music, but then again, I think there is great music made and released every single year, you just have to be open to it. As far as lists go...they're completely subjective, everyone has favorites and mine is no better (or worse) than anyone else's. So here they are in no particular order, but where I thought they fit best in a mix-a-lot form.

Oh, yes Happy 9 days in for 2010. (No big deal, but that totally rhymed).

I'm really liking the jingle jangle of this guitar…on this Thanksgive Eve.
Meet Real Estate out of New Jersey.

This foursome sings songs about the Jersey shores, Pensacola shores also known as the redneck Riviera. They sing about rolexes getting lost in the sand. All the things we go through in our childhood, yet my memories include a Timex, Casio (or maybe a Swatch in my rolling in the dollar years) getting lost in dirt or weeds. Either way, I enjoy their songs very much. Reminds me a little of Holiday Shores and a little of Surfer Blood who I also really like.

Listen to the songs below by Real Estate, the first is off their self titled 7”. The second is off their full length album (titled Real Estate) which just came out last week. Oh yeah…. The band name seems way too familiar…I’m not sure why, but I guess if they like it that’s all that matters.

The Flaming Lips have always been a staple when it comes to modern day music and one of my personal favorite bands. I'm always also proud to point out this magnificent group is from my hometown...which is OKC. LOVE that.

I love Wayne C. because he has always done what he and the Lips wanted to do even though it may have taken years and years to become what everyone is willing to love. They kept playing and playing and have become what most indie / rock bands aspire to become.

Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer

Blitzen Trapper's 2008 "Furr" is a great album, it combines folk, rock and a nice layer of soothing keyboards. Their sound reminds me of the photo above... when i listen i see images of cowboys in space or scenes from the movie West World (yes the one with Yul Brenner).

Luckily we can picture more of these images as Blitzen Trapper recently released a 7 song EP titled from the single- "Black River Killer".

Grizzly Bear meets Michael McDonald

I love Pizza and I love wedding cake. I could potentially eat pizza daily if forced to and I probably like wedding cake more than most folks. I often think about wedding cake for dessert even when weddings are not anywhere in the near future. I also love Nachos and I love Crème Brulee, I sometimes think about making a monster plate of nachos (using an entire bag of chips) at my house while I watch TV, and at other times I think about being able to make a delicious Crème Brulee, with the crusty burnt coating on top. I currently do not own one of those little torches, but will put on my "to purchase list".
I could carry on all day about my favorite entrees vs. desserts….

Here is the thing; I like these things completely separate from one another. I don’t like my wedding cake icing on top of my pizza. I don’t want to dip my nachos in my crème brulee. For one, my chip would not be able to penetrate that crispy carmel coating, but mainly it’s because I don’t like the combination of the two tastes together. It’s unsettling, its awkward, and I dont think those tastes belong together (Kettle corn on the other hand is a completely different story)

The unsettling taste of mixing salty and sweet foods together is how I feel about Michael McDonald singing with Grizzly Bear on “While You Wait for the Others” from 2009’s Veckatimest. Those that know me know I have a strange love for Michael McDonald. Part of it is probably some reminiscence of my childhood, but the other part is pure enjoyment. I even listed McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” as my favorite song from 1986. Some find his voice painful and nothing short of music only to be played when riding an elevator, but I truly do find pleasure in his work.

Grizzly Bear, in my opinion, has released one of the best albums of the year. I cannot get enough of them. When I heard McDonald was singing this song I thought it was a joke, but then I purchased the EP and sure enough, it’s the real McDonald. I have to give it a few more listens to see where I will finally land on this. Either way I can say I applaud GB for going for it and experimenting with such a genre opposite artist.

Next, I want to hear Grizzly Bear cover Sweet Freedom or maybe a Genesis song…say “No Reply at All” off of Abacab.

Holiday Shores

What do you think of when you hear Holiday Shores? Do you think of sandy beaches along a Northeastern coastline? Do you think of 50's style bathing suits or a boardwalk with roller coasters? Are there Beach Balls and images of coneys floating in your head? Maybe Cape Cod or a small beach community in Maine.

These are the things i used to think. But now when i hear the name Holiday Shores I think of of a jangly poppy guitar with distorted 60's style keys. I think of worry free timing and rough yet easy listening vocals. However, I will always continue to follow-up these thoughts with coneys.

This 5 piece band calls Tallahassee, FL home which was somewhat surprising when I first read just because no other band that I recall was from Tallahassee, but really good music can come from anywhere. Their new 10 track album "Columbus'd the Whim" was released on August, 4th. At times its a very familiar sound, but its also not really directly comparable to another band either. As mentioned above the style is reminiscent of the 60's low fidelity type of sound. I would definitely encourage people to buy this album. I can easily see this being on some "best of '09" lists.

The summer is still among us for at least a few more weeks, so relax, flip on the bbq and enjoy the remaining sunny days while you can with the Holiday Shores.

Fleet Foxes (revisited)

2008 was quite a year for the Fleet Foxes, they were part of the folk / indie explosion which i love. I was suddenly reminded of their beauty this past weekend while doing some outdoor painting. Thats right...painting outdoors. Manly work...I mean real manly stuff. I'm talking- sweat was on the brim, had to have a cold beer to cool me off, shirt off cause I'm in the backyard where the neighbors cant see me, type of work. Anyway, the ipod was on shuffle and the Double F's came on (Fleet Foxes)

The song that came on wasnt from their 2008 album. The song i heard was "She Got Dressed" off their 2006 EP. Its a very good EP and...it actually made me think of "In the Hot, Hot Rays" off the same album and how appropriate that song was for the current outdoor painting situation. So, i decided to listen to the entire album and was surpised by how much i love it...to me its completely different than their 2008 breakthrough.

It seems to be a bit more Rockin' (if thats an appropriate word to use with the Fleet Foxes) or maybe its just more jammin'?

This six song EP isnt available on Itunes and i dont know exactly how i have a copy, but its definitely worth tracking down.

We Are Country Mice

We are Country Mice formed in Brooklyn just a very short time ago, but hearing WACM perform live you would think they've been playing and writing together for years. Last night I had the pleasure of seeing WACM in Kansas City (Davey's Uptown) which was their 2nd stop of their midwest tour. Not that any band should be described, but here I go...I would say they're classic rock & roll meets a rodeo. Or Imagine Neil Young bumping into Wayne Coyne at a bbq joint, followed by a hug, a slab of ribs, ice cold margaritas under the stars on a park bench out back. However, just typing a bbq situation or Rock & Roll meets a Rodeo isn't fair, because they're much more than those things. They have something all of their own which needs to be seen and heard individually to grasp.

I should also say, I not only had pleasure of getting to watch a great band, but I was also lucky enough to hang out with who I consider two very good friends and experience them doing something they love and do very well.

I will continue to post about WACM as they continue to play and create.

It’s only a five song EP, but the punch it packs is harder than an asphalt sandwich.
The opening title track bounces in and out like a beach ball in the Atlantic. Disappearing Ink is a more up tempo and a jarring bass line. My personal favorite off the 15 minute album is the fun yet ghostly whimpering Famous Last Words. Kind of repetitive, but it makes the song so appealing. Game of Diamonds may be the Debbie downer of the 5 songs, but it’s still good. It’s just a little slower but a nice segue to Circulation which jumps right on track with the first three songs.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

I am really enjoying the new Grizzly Bear album this on this beautiful Saturday. Just got it this morning and have listened to it three times. This is a band that is able to take 50'sish music and make the hair on my neck stand. Truly timeless. I dont play guitar, but if i did i would want it to sound like this. Its beautiful. The stands out for me are "Two Weeks", "While You Wait for the Others", "Ready, Able" and "About Face", but they're all extremely great and the standouts could change as i continue to listen. I thought Yellow House was a good album, but wasnt crazy about it like i know others were. I'll definitely be going back listen.

From point A to point B and back again. Olly Oxen Free, will take you for a ride unlike most indie rock albums.

The beats are big in wonderful combination with a jarring and eerie guitar moving along a slippery ledge. On one side darkness and the other side freedom from creative restraint. Each song finds the band's feet slipping from one side to the other.

There is no lack of imagination in this effort offering a lot of abstract thoughts ranging from the thought of devolving through reincarnation to extraterrestrial evil plots but somehow you’ll find it relevant.

I've been wanting to post a few songs from this group out of Southern California, Deep Sea Diver. The group is led by Jessica Dobson (who played guitar in Beck's Modern Guilt tour). Jessica pictured above.

I saw Beck play at the Uptown theatre in Kansas City last Fall and wondered who the talented guitar / backup singer might be. I was happy to discover she had her own group out of Long Beach who i like oh so much. The EP is excellent and I cant wait to hear the full length.

I wish it was Spring weather vs. Cold, wet, rainy stay inside weather. This song makes me want to be outdoors. Excellent.

The French pop indie rockers are at it again, the band I speak of is Phoenix. Their new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is scheduled for a May release but almost the entire album has been leaked and can be found on almost any music blog. I'm a fan of Phoenix. I always know what I'm in for with them...its poppy, happy, pretty songs. Timeless summertime rock, is what i like to call it.

I liked their first album United, I was luke warm with Alphabetical, but really liked 2006's It's Never Been Like That and have been anticipating a new release by these Frenchies....oh side note, the lead singer is married to Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette)....that seems to be a point of reference you'll find on all the other blogs. Phoenix did some work with Air which did the score for Sofia's first movie....i wonder if thats how they met?

The Kora Records sent over an Mp3 from their next album release which is from a band named Pree. I was immediatley interested in this song only after a few seconds of hitting play.

I'd like to make a little list of my favorite tracks of '08. You could look at these tracks and also maybe make the assumption that these are my favorite albums, you might be right but I dont want to confirm one way or the other.....See, I like to keep the readers guessing. It keeps them coming back to GBS, but thats blogging 101.

Time to get serious though, I shouldve posted this mix about 17 days ago but have been busy trying to feel out '09. Trying to just dip my toes in to see what the temparture is like, just a small sample of '09....a starter plate if you will before I take off the robe and jump right in. Well, so far i think its going to be a good one....so lets all jump in the '09 pool. But first, before we take the plunge lets take a moment (or 53 minutes and 39 seconds) to listen to my favorite songs (maybe albums of '08) streaming in white box to the left. Oh, and if you really like how the list looks or sounds, I have a zip file i could send.....just lemme know.

Finally, a new post, plus a Taco. Yes.

My busy work season is almost over and the holidays are approaching which I'm pretty happy about. I saw Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks last week in Lawrence, KS. Blitzen Trapper was the opening band. Great show and great company...you know who you are. I also ran my first marathon since my last post so I'm pretty much a bad ass now. And more importantly, Obama was elected into office which means America voted the right way and things are already happening (even before hes taken office).

So, what have I been listening too the last few weeks? Some different stuff. Mainly some 'ol fashion indie rock and just some regular indie pop too. Here goes:

This first jewel is from a band named Sunset. The key member from Sunset is from Sound Team out of Austin, Bill Baird. Sound Team broke up last year and I was kind of bummed about it but then discoverd Mr. Baird has been doing some solo stuff and Sunset stuff for a little bit. There are 3 albums that I'm aware of...one is Bright Blue Dream (released in March '08), Glowing City (released in July '08) but a new album called Pink Clouds..(A variety of recordings that come together as an album. Produced on clear pink cassettes with handmade covers. only 100 copies). This band is a music factory. Here are some tracks from each of the mentioned albums. Check out the song Loveshines, it could have easily made The Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Not sure why but it has the sound..kind of like the song from Air in that movie. Dominate it.

Next is a Swedish band called "Love is All". There new album actually just came out this Tuesday. I like what I've hear. Very raw sounds, and I started to jump in and call them another 80's type band but thats a weak and easy statement to make. They almost have more of a late 70's punk sound, but thats also easy and weak. At times the singer Josephine Olausson voice can push your ear drums to the limit but it grows on you and then you want more. Weird. Couple of songs here. Movie Romance and Sea Sick from the album- A Hundred Things Keep Me Up.

Finally, this last band's album, Little Joy (self titled) came out last week, Big news is- one of the band members is from The Strokes. It's Fabrizio Moretti, which should be a fake name. I like the Strokes....even though they've lost their cool over the years, just because i guess. No real back up as to why but i still like them. I think they make good music and its always fun to revisit. This album is very good, its a little more laid back than a Strokes record and has some tropical-ness to it. This is probably because one of the other members is a very well known Brazilian indie rocker guy named Rodrigo Amarante (from Los Hermanos). Also, multi-instrumentalist named Binki Shapiro is in the band. Overall, good album, two tracks from this album.

New Stuff Sunday

Some interesting music out there as usual. The new Kings of Leon "Only By The Night" has been out for sometime but I'm just now getting around to it. I really enjoyed the first two singles "Crawl" and "Sex on Fire". They both seemed to have less of that classic rock sound but more stadium rock as did Because of the Times. I'm convinced this band can add little dashes of any genre and make it sound genuine and natural. Its hard to choose a favorite off this album as I like all of them. The first track "Closer" (Download below) is one that sticks out to me right now.

Next, Vampire Weekend. I really enjoyed their self title release from earlier in the year but hadnt given it much more thought until this past week when I saw their new single "Ottoman" (Download below) which is featured in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist starring Michael Cerra. I really like this song, it could easily have been on their debut album and maybe was a B-side. Anyway, I wonder how this movie will be? I'm a big Cerra fan but I'm a little skeptical about this movie for some reason.

Finally, an album that was completely off my radar and I just stumbled upon it late this week. The Sea and Cake released Car Alarm. I've still been enjoying Everybody which was released May '07. This Chicago band never seems to disappoint, they can instantly bring a smile to a frowny face. Several favorites off this one but I've posted my ultimate faves- "On a Letter" and "Weekend" (Download Below) for the time being. I'll try to post more but its the busy season for me at work.

Its been a full month since my last post which is lame. I've been busy and havent been making time to blogalot or at all.

A lot of things happen in a month-

-Russia invaded Georgia
-DNC- Obama / Biden rocked the house
-RNC- McCain / Palin talk tough...awesome.
-Best friend Shane got married
-I've been running a lot. Ran- 15, 17 and 18 miles.
-McCain went up in the polls
-The stock market crashed.
-Obama is now up

Here is what I've been listening to.

Ra Ra Riot-
These kids are pretty good. I liked the EP but the full length is very good as well. cut and dry melody driven indie pop. Yeah!

Blitzen Trapper-
I've been a little obsessed with these guys and I'm excited for this album to come out. The first single Furr is great but I really like Black River Killer and Gold for Bread. These guys are playing several shows with Malkmus.

I didnt want to like this band, I had heard so much about them and thought it was a bunch of Pitchfork leg humpers claiming they had found the holy grail. I had tried to listen to them once before, but I was either in the wrong mindset or just not listening properly. It happens from time to time, but I gave it another try and I do really like this album.

It's folky, wolf snuggling, mountain climbing (not in a North Face kind of way), tree hugging and Fox tickelingly good. Robin Peckhold is a great songwriter and has a great voice and when the harmonies kick in this band sounds a little like My Morning Jacket at times. I wouldnt say their music sounds much like that as its more of rugged classical jamboree.

These guys are currenty on tour and a few shows with Wilco. Unfortunatley, no KC tour dates in the near future scheduled.

Maps and Atlases

Maps and Atlases released a 5 song EP earlier this month titled "You and Me and the Mounatain" and I wish it would've been an LP. I get that EP's are extended singles but with a band like M&A I want more.

Their 2006 debut album "Trees, Swallows, Houses" is progressive and a little Math Rock but the songs still have that human feel which is hard to achieve when you're playing songs as "Mathy" or as structured as theirs. Maps and Atlases play songs that are technical yet organic which is what the band set out to do when they joined, I think their debut and the new EP represents this very well.

The new album is a bit poppier which is good and Dave Davison vocals sound much better than I remember. Now I'm excited to here more from this young, talented, "mathy" group. Sp, bring on the LP and the kick ass math equations....I have a bad ass calculator and I'm adequate at Excel.

Here is the band playing live- "Everyplace is a House" from '06 Trees, Swallaws, Houses. Its not the most amazing live performance and as you'll see his voice is a little off/weak at times but the music is so good its forgivable.

Wild Mountain Nation would probably be filed under one of the best of '07 if I had listened sooner. Here is a video from that album (same name) and a couple off this album are streaming to the box in the top right.

I love the classic rock feel of this song.

Apparently I'm a mix addict as of late. A real mixer of songs, if you will.

I dont know if they're truly mixtapes since they're not full length, but rather than bore the few readers out there and myself with a full 10-12 mix, i think its good to keep it to 5-7 songs. Since its a summer Friday I thought it would be good to post some easy going songs, a few ambient ones, and a few that are good for a Friday / Saturday summer day. Give it a listen. These 6 songs will be in the top white box to the Right...and there are still 3 Beck tracks off the new album below this mix (now a total of 4 if you look real hard).

Back to work for me.

1. Blonde Redhead- Silently
This album (23) is one of the best of 2007 and I wish I would've talked about it more but its never too late I guess.

2. The Republic Tigers- Made Concrete
I was late to game on this group. I'd heard about them but just never was grabbed by them until a friend who's musical taste i really respect pointed them out. After listening to the full album I was convinced. These guys are just another example of the great (and often times verlooked) talent in Kansas City / Lawrence. Such a great pool of talent here.

3. Francis International Airport- Words on Logs
Just a download earlier in the week from an online banner advertisement. Thats right,the advertisement grabbed my attention. Usually I disregard them but this one looked so organic and legit that I went for it and found a decent song out of it.

4. Ratatat- Bruleè
I got to keep the ambience going and this New York duo will always do that. This is one of their new songs off of LP3. Great album, great band, great song. Try not to smile when this is playing

5. Beck- Orphans
Okay, okay. I'm humping Beck right now...i already blogged about him two days ago but I really like this album and yes this might now fall exactly into the "ambient category" but it at least has its foot in the ambience pool...dont you think?

6. Dr. Dog- Old Days
I'm really into these guys and how they're able to keep a 60's pop but still make it fresh. I dont think they're in no way a 60's rip off band but just fans of that time and very talented.

Modern Guilt

Beck's latest album came out yesterday and I've got to say I'm pleasently surprised. I wasnt a monster fan of Guero, in fact liked the 4 Bit-Rate remixes that came out before Guero better than the actual album itself. Modern Gulit grabbed me right away, maybe it was just timing, me looking for a change or something new, but nonetheless it happened. This is an artist that never should seize to amaze, he can really do no wrong. A few of my favorite tracks so far are Youthless and Replica. Youthless is as straight forward of a funky bass line as you can get (i hate using the word "funky" too because, well...its a ridiculous word) but I dont care and I'm not ashamed to say i love the song right now.

Next is Replica, its a little all over the board at first listen but makes complete sense after a couple of listens and actually starts to become "pretty" within all the madness of the crashing bass thumps and bumps. Thats right, I said it...pretty.

Also, i dont want to leave out Gamma Ray, song #2 on the album, it takes me back to the High School days of Odelay mixed with a dash of Mutations.

Below is from a post I made last summer around this time. I love this country and am ready to see some major Changes for the better in the next year. Go Obama!

On the topic of Independence Day, I thought it would be appropriate to give a shout out to the French. Many people regard the French as being rude or too proud, even folks who have never set foot in the country.

I think this. There are polite people and rude people. Different cultures behave differently, maybe French just keep to themselves a little more. Yes they're are a proud country and they should be. We're a proud country too. Yes, the French do expect visitors to try and speak their language. (that sounds very familiar)

My point is......we should always stay in good company with the French. They were good pals when were trying to become a country. Its partly because of France that we are a country today. They had a Navy, and they defeated the British at the Battle of Chesapeake. The British surrendered at the next battle (Yorktown) because of this.

Sorry about the silly rant. So, what the hell does this have to do with music?

Well, what better way for you to give our French friends a high five then by listening to some French artists. There is no better way.

On a sidenote, I looked and looked for a song by Gerard Depardieu but couldnt find anything. Instead I had to settle for Phoenix, Stereolab, and The French Kicks.

The French Kicks are in no way from France but they have French in their name and I really enjoy them. Besides, you can't give the French all the credit.

Give me some feedback. Did I come on to aggressive?

The Great Northwest

The kind folks at The Kora Records sent over a press kit and album for The Great Northwest (out of Portland, OR). The album, The Widespread Reign of the Great Northwest is due out July 29th and is led by a gentleman named Brian Coates (interesting bio).

The album is spacey, mellow, eerie at times and occaisonally has a faint familar sound of the Dandy Warhol's slower stuff. Note, album was mixed at the DW's oddotorium in Portland and Peter Holmström or (Loew), the DW's guitarist is also featured on this album.

The lead single should grab your attention and is even hypnotizing at times (in a great way). So, do yourself a favor...grab a beer and listen to the lead single here- Chief John.

One of my favorite songs from this album so far is titled "Know What I mean". Its a crunchy yet melodic tune that reminds me a little of Grandaddy's Am180. Listen here- Here

The Joggers (New Songs)

A few songs from the Joggers' Tour Only CD have been floating around and I'm glad to say I've finally got my mits on a couple. Also, there is a pretty interesting interview with the Joggers, courtesy of Funeral Pudding out of Austin.

I've posted multiple times about this group and each time I listen to these guys or hear something new it always surprises me that they're not more popular and even a bit frustrating, but hopefully this year or next year they will get the attention they deserve or find a label that is a good match. Pure talent from everyone in this quartet.

Since Memorial Day I've been trying to complete my Spring / Summer '08 mix, but now that I've finished its June and time to drop the Spring. I love listening to and creating mix tapes oh so much but they take a while for me to craft and never sound the same in the end as they began.

Even though its summer time this isnt necessarily your summer dance mix, in fact it starts a little slower and easy listening like, but if you're patient and let each song play out you'll hopefully be snapping your fingers midway through so dont worry it has its fair amount of pop as well.

Saturday....late afternoon heading into the evening before placing steak on the grill

Zon or a summer or white ale for Beer. Pinot Grigio for wine

Now to the mix:

There are 11 tracks on this mix and it runs slightly under 40 minutes so its an extremely easy listen. While putting this together I went up to 15 tracks, but they werent fitting and I was just starting to add new songs i liked but had to hold back because it was getting to be convoluted and all over the board. Not all of these songs are brand new either- 4 are from 2008, 4 are from 2007, 2 from 2006 & 1 from 2005.

1. Rob Crow- Up

I've talked about him before and mentioned I really like his solo album. This song is beginning to make its way into movie trailers and commercials.

2. Pseudosix- Under the Waves

A recent summer favorite that is calm, but also has something very powerful midway through especially at the end..

3. Black Lips- Cold Hands

Reminds me of an old 60's outlaw song....running in the summer heat from the law in a comfortable cadiallac.

4. White- Rabbits- Tourist Trap

Blends nicely with the two songs around it and what a better song for those summer road trips. I kind of like Tourist Traps.

5. Beirut- Postcards from Italy

Beautiful nostalgic song. This song felt right to swing the mood upwards. At the 2 minute mark it turns colorful and pushes the rest of the songs in that direction.

6. White Denim- Sitting

Picks up okay from Beiruts "Postcards" Starting to become one of my favorite songs of the year

7. French Kicks- Abandon

I like this song off their latest album and it could almost go anywhere but it makes for a tastey White Denim & Midlake sandwich

8. Midlake- Young Bride

This is an older song but I've always liked it and it fits nice as the 'ol 8 hole.

9. Dr. Dog- Heart it Races

This band continues to impress me. This is a Architecture of Helsinki cover, but I actually like their take of the song better

10. Brendan Benson- Cold Hands (Warm Heart)

Jack White gets most of the credit for the Raconteurs, but Brendan as a writer and musician adds his pop to the group. Here's a song from his 2005 solo album

11. The Helio Sequence- Back to This

I cant get tired of this song. Each time i hear it i enjoy it, it makes for a nice ending to a summer mix

A couple of new songs have been released for the 3rd upcoming Ratatat album, LP3.

These both actually came off of 7' vinyl

One song is titled Shiller and the second is the hawaiian themed Mahola.

I like both songs (Mahola a little more), but still feel both are just decent. I'm left wanting a little more and maybe thats what the Ratatats intended.

The Band

The Band is one of those old groups that I really never was a big fan of, I always thought they were too old, no longer relevant to a hip young dude like me, and I thought i was more evolved than a band that would call themselves The Band. I never gave them a chance, just swept them under the rug and thought they were a Lynyrd Skynard knockoff, Bob Dylan backup musicians, or Allman Brothers revisited.

After watching Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz I feel very foolish for thinking those things...

The songs i did know were their mega-hits like The Weight, Drove Old Dixie Down, and Cripple Creek and still dont know if I'll ever like those songs, but I do know I really like their less popular stuff...and it makes me realize why many consider them one of the most influential bands ever. My Morning Jacket and Wilco, to name a few could be considered descendants of this band (among many other great bands) .

I'm especially liking Don't Do It and The Shape I'm In (which are streaming in the box to the right).

Laid back, well crafted, and breezy is my description of Pseudosix 2nd album (self titled).

This album came out August of 2007, but I've put off giving it a true listen until this weekend.

Its a little bit pop and a little dark too which makes for an intersting listen. Not sure why but this weekend it really came alive.

There a couple of songs streaming in the music box but you should listen to the album in its entirity here when / if you have time- LISTEN HERE

I recommend: Under the Waves (song 2), Apathy and Excess (Song 3), Fire vs. Flame (Song 9)

My Morning Jacket

My Morninig Jacket released a new mp3 from what will be their 5th studio album. The track (and album name) is Evil urges and currently set for a June 20th, 2008 release date. Frontman / producer Jim James had this to say about the album title (courtesy of Wired).

"The world today is such a confused place. Things that people think are good
values are obviously twisted, but there are other things considered evil that
obviously aren't. There is real evil out there, but Evil Urges is about how all
of these things that you've been told are evil really aren't, unless they're
actually hurting something or somebody."

The band also said they wanted this album to contain less of a traditional rock n roll produced sound, but more of what they represent at a live performace.

This band slowly grew on my after 2005 Z but really in the lasttwo year I've become more and more into it this band after getting a hold of the live Okonoks double disc album. Looking forward to this one-

French Kicks

The NYC based band French Kicks is back with a new album "Swimming". I've liked their previous albums which are garage bandish...simple tunes with nice beats. Also, while i was in my lab I discovered a formula for pop music.

This new one is a little different, much more calm and a little less punk face, but still keeps the attention. My favorites off the album so far are Said So What, Carried Away, and Love in the Ruins.

Another thing about this album- French Kicks have always sounded a bit like other bands out there, but on this one I think they've experimented a but instead of using the exact (sometimes repetive) post punk formula.

Rating- 3 out of 5 Gare Bears- There are four tunes from the new album streaming in the box to the right- listen to them.

The Raconteurs vs. The Doobie Brothers

Lets forget about the fact that The Doobie Brothers have 14 members in their band, forget about the fact that The Doobie Brothers are a sure thing in a bar fight, the fact that Doobie Bros have had more sex than any band in history.

Lets also forget about the fact that Michael McDonald was in The Doobie Brothers and that they sang a few songs like "What a Fool Believes". I'm asking you to forget about these facts for the next minutes... please.

Instead, I ask you to imagine this- what if The Doobie Brothers were onstage and could only choose one song. It just so happens I'm topless in the front row and they ask me to pick the song. I yell "Play that Black Water whewwww!!!!!!" The Doobie Brothers smile, nod and start picking their guitars and bobbing their heads. I've got a monster smile on my face as i look up at the sky in a reminiscent sort of way.

Stay with me, here.

However, the next band pops out and its led by none other than Jack White. I yell, "Yeah! its the White Stripes" Jack looks down at me on the front row, smiles nods his head, No then tosses me a pick. I then see a few more rag tag looking guys follow to the stage and quickly shout "Yeah! Its The Raconteurs!!" Jack grabs the mic and quickly ask me "Big Gar, we all were watching you from backstage and couldnt get over how much you enjoyed Black Water by The Doobie Brothers, and well...we'd like to play one of our new tunes that we think you'll like as well" Of course, me being star struck and shocked that they know my name, I agree.

They begin to pick their guitars and the guy on the fiddle begins to lick his lips. They begin playing a song of their newly released album (Consolers of the Lonely) "Old Enough"

Next thing you know I'm backstage, Michael McDonald and Jack White are sharing stories of the road and toasting to a couple of luke warm Miller High Lifes. Me, I'm on the couch smiling in amazement while both of these songs are in my head.

The Black Keys are attacked by lazers...

In preparation for the highly anticipated April 1st release of 'Attack and Release' the Ohio due have taken an unconventional way to generating Web site buzz for the upcoming release. Instead of reading the typical bio or looking through photos you now have to the chance to shoot down some pixalated laser touting space cadets. I'm not sure exactly what the point is, but it definitely gives you something to do while awaiting what is going to be an amazing album. Barack had a speech yesterday. He addressed the questions that have arisen on talk news shows across the world surrounding his minister, Jeremiah Wright. Wright did say some awful things in those sound bites and I don’t agree with them, but I'm not voting for his minister. Side note- Could I watch those videos and see where his minister is coming from? Yes. Were they extremely exaggerated points of view? Yes.

It would be one thing if Barack’s platform was pushing for a moral agenda and that he would be consulting with Wright before making important decisions. Are we as Americans not past these kinds of politics? We've seen the results of a presidency based on this. I'm glad Obama pointed out that there will always be distractions, he's right. Someone will find something that’s different or not part of the norm and as we've also seen, make things up. I never cared before what church Barack attended and never even thought about what his religious beliefs were. When reporters start telling us what's important...and that we should be afraid of this and we start buying into it, that’s a problem. We need to decide for ourselves what is important and not be frightened by things like this because in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter.

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks' new album came out on Tuesday (Real Emotional Trash). The indie legend continues to show why he is a legend. Beautiful songs, cool hooks, nice solos. After one listen, I think I love it. Its time to to make an "I heart Malkmus T-shirt". Lets not forget about The Jicks, so far I think their performance on this album meets their best work if not surpassing it. Thats pretty good, comparing against-The 1st self titled (Stephen Malkmus) Pig Lib, and Face the Truth.

The Joggers have realeased several tour dates coming up very soon (in case you hadn't noticed, the Joggers have become one of my favorite bands in the past year). Also, it looks like the Joggers will be the opening act up for none other than Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks for a few of their shows.

Oh yeah, and SM&J have a brand new album coming on on Tuesday 3/4/08 (also known as Jr. Super Tuesday). The album is currently streaming on their myspace page.

I'd really love to see these two bands play together. I wonder if Malkmus sees a little bit of Pavement in the Joggers??

I just found out over the weekend that this band called it quits in September of last year (9/07). The Austin, TX based Sound Team released their final album, Monster Movie a year prior to the breakup. Its a bummer a band as good as this will no longer be around.

However, I'm sure the members will find some other musical projects to be a part of.

I have a crush on Vampire Weekend

I just found out about this band two nights ago on Elbows. After that, I saw hundreds of blog posts about this band, and then found an article in the NY Times. The Band I'm referring to is Vampire Weekend out of NYC. Its interesting the amount of buzz around this band but after I listened to their first single A-Punk and I was hooked. I then got my hands on the rest of the album and havent stopped listening to it yet.

Some of their songs sound like a normal indie pop band, but there is more to the band than just that. Other songs have an African feel, and others have a Classical influence.

The band themselves, describe their genre of music as "Upper West Side Soweto". Not sure about that, but its worth the listen.

Keep Your Eyes Ahead

Only 31 days into the new year and I'm happy with the music thats been released so far, solely because of this album Keep Your Eyes Ahead by The Helio Sequence. It didnt grab me like 2004's Love and Distance at first, but I think i will end up with more appreciation for this one.

At first listen, the songs didnt seem very challenging or as complex as their prior work, but this album was supposed to be just that. Simple.

I think it sounds less complex because there isnt as many noticeable bleeps and bops from computers effects. The electronics have been toned down significantly and play more like a backing vocal than anything. I like this.

Favorite tracks are Back to This and Broken Afternoon. They're available below for listening if you'd like. The first Back to This has just enough mellow synth over whining guitar slides, with double vocal tracks which makes a sound milkshake for my ears...

The second song Broken Afternoon has some blatant hints of Dylan, which i guess every artists has to try and replicate at some point in their career. Not meant to be a shot, i dont think its a bad thing. From what I can gather, its a song about not the best of luck...but everything turns out okay in a Broken Afternoon. Its a pretty tune.

Good Album. Poppy, golden age type of music.

Definitely worth owning.

I dont mean for this post to be a downer (its actually meant to be a positive). The greatest thing about music is when you can say it touches you and makes you reflect on things that happen throughout your life. This song does just that for me.

I remember my first time hearing this song. I remember being really touched by lyrics and having that "i know how that feels" moment. It truly is a great song.

When I hear this song now, it doesnt so much remind of loss or sad tings, its thankfullness. Thankful to have the opportunity, freedom and capability.

Best Opening Track on an album in '07

Maybe it was all the buzz, maybe its because of the "pay what you want" initiative, maybe its because anytime Radiohead comes out with an album the anticipation and expectations are all over the board. You dont know what to expect, because they're constantly reinventing themselves. You also dont know if it will be an album that will immediately grab your attention or if it will take time to grow on you.

"In Rainbows" captured all of those, but the opening song grabbed me immediately and initially, i was excited to continuely listen on to this fabulous record. I think we'll be hearing more about this album throughout the year.

For this self-made category (Best Face Melter), I have to go with the White Stripes "You dont know what love is (you just do what you're told)" off of 2007's Icky Thump. The entire song is great, but the last 45 seconds has to easily be my favorite guitar solo of the year.

I'm not even embarassed to admit that each time I hear it, I incorrectly air guitar to it.

Prettiest Song of '07

I didnt want to make an entire "best of list" cause its kind of late and might be a bit stale at this point. Instead I wanted to choose specific songs and put them into my own categories. I will try to get them all in this week.

The first category I wanted to start with is- The Prettiest song of year. This could be lyrically, musically or both. The song i have chosen encompasses both. That song is "A Sunday Smile" by Beirut. This song was not a clear winner, "Someone Great" by LCD Soundsystem was a close consideration, but this may fall into another category.

The thing that pushed this song to the top of the shelf is the music, itself. It's such a simple and familiar background, but Zach Condon's voice layered on top of each other creates a full choir on this song. Also, the addition of the horns with the gorgeous lyrics produce something very powerful.

This song is off of The Flying Club Cup whis was released in September of last year.

Keep Your Eyes Ahead

A little late to post on this, but I'm still getting over the 10 day work break I had.....so lay off.

The Helio Sequence released their first single "Keep Your Eyes Ahead" last week. The new album (with the same title) will be released in just a few more weeks, 1/29/08 to be exact.

The new song took me a few listens to really get into it, but after a few listens I'm digging it. For some reason it didn't immediately grab me like most of their other songs, but I've been anticipating this new album for several months now so my expectations have been as high as the sun. Also, both members said this new album is stripped down and is minimalistic, or a simpler sound. Cant wait for 1/29/08.

Its a good song to bring in the New Year with. Happy 2008 everyone and please download the new single below, thanks to Sub pop Records.

Something else I thought was very cool - I wrote the drummer Benjamin Weikel a few weeks ago to ask him a few specifics about the drums he plays (Sidenote- watch this man drum, hes amazing). Over the holiday break he personally replied and I thought that was nice. As busy as artists are on tour..its nice when one of them takes the time to respond personally.

I recently got a chance to see Todd Hayne's biopic 'I'm Not There' about about the many faces of Bob Dylan and it was quite the cinematic treat. If you havent heard about this film, Hayne's picked six different characters to portray Dylan throughout his career. Cate Blanchette's rebel Dylan appeared to be the focus and best portrayal in the film, yet performances by Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Heath Ledger also had standout moments. Personally, my favorite part was towards the end of the movie when Jim James from My Morning Jacket sang a most excellent version of "Goin to Acapulco".

With all this Dylan talk, I couldn't help but post one of my favorite live clips of ol Bobby. The year is 1975 and the song is 'Isis'...arguably one of the best written songs of that decade. This Rolling Thunder Review era gem not only displays the fire of Dylan but also showcases amazing backing musicians that any alt-country band of todays era are sure to compliment. Whether you're a Dylan fan or not, check it out...you'll surely appreciate his knack for scarves and face paint.

The Kevin Costners

First off, its their real name.

Second, they're pretty good.

The Kevin Costners hail from North France (i believe) and they have been together since 2004. You can tell by listening to just "We Ain't Steve Vai" that these guys are doing what they love. They remind me (a little bit) of a poppier "Super Furry Animals" for some reason. I think its the guitar.

From what I've read, they should possibly have their first album out by late January of 2008.

Give them a listen, at least give the first track a listen. Good stuff.

The Evens, a band I wish I would've known about sooner

The Evens are a Lo-Fi Washington D.C. based band. Members consist of Ian MacKaye, lead singer of Fugazi and Amy Farina. They are a very delightful band.

The majority of their songs include Ian singing and on bass, or baritone guitat which has a very distinct sound and Amy on Drums & Vocals. The way they harmonize is beautiful.

They're not as intense as Fugazi, but MacKaye & Farina are able to capture an amazing sound that is hard for me to explain.

Micheal Jackson's Thriller turned 25 on December 1st.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ranked Thriller third on their "Definitive 200" list, which is a compilation of what they believe to be the greatest albums ever. At age 25, The New York Times called Jackson a "musical phenomenon," further commenting that "in the world of pop music, there is Michael Jackson and there is everybody else."

Obviously, perceptions have changed since then. I'm not saying "we" or the "media" are wrong to shift our view on MJ , but simply noting that at one time he was on top of the world and now there will always be a negative conotation associated with him.

I dont think you have to like him to love this album. Some may be a little surprised for me to say that this very well might fall somewhere within my top favorite albums of all time. Just look at this track listing. What are yours?

Someone I respect a great deal is leaving work to take a pretty amazing job opportunity in NYC. He's a guy I admire a lot. It's not only his work but also his taste in music / art, sense of humor and his collection of Western button down shirts. I made him a mix CD last week, however, it sounds a lot cooler to call it a "mixtape".

When I started putting this together it was going to be NYC themed but it became pretty tough and I wasnt into some of the songs I was coming up with. I was getting further away from something I liked in order to stay consistent. I decided to try choose songs that talked about change, leaving, and with a couple of random songs I thought he might like and that also flowed well. Mixtapes are fun for a few reasons, you get to find old favorites that might have gotten shoved to the back of the library, you get to choose the theme / flow, and then you get to await their response. Hopefully the response is positive.

Rob is a busy guy

Rob Crow has been a busy guy as of late. This year alone, he's released (or been a part of) three full length albums.

I really only knew of this fellow from Pinback, but apparently he's in like 10 other bands. The three albums he's released this year are are below. Theres is a sample from each, to boot.

I haven't had a chance to listen to all three in depth but they're all very similar. His voice is obviously the same, maybe he just gets tired of hanging out with the same band members all of the time.

The Power of an Instrumental in film

They've been the butt of many jokes, but why? Is it because of Trey Parker and Matt Stone? Is it because deep down we really do enjoy them and are kind of embarassed to admit it? They can be cheesy but they can also be the most memorable parts of a movie.

As you'll see, the favorites are from the 80's. I couldnt think of many others for as of right now. Donnie Darko has a great montage but even it takes place in the 80's.

Sidenote, Eye of the Tiger doesnt do it for me, sorry. Maybe it should but i get nothing. This Training montage does.

This onbe is more of a montage than an instrumental because time passes and there is major progress.

I came across this guy last week, Copy. His latest album "Hair Guitar" came out earlier this year so I'm a little late to the game there. He's out of Portland, OR of all places. Not many good musicians from there. He's all electronic which might turn some away but I encourage you to give it a shot. The beats are great, oh and a big fan of the tickling of the electric ivories. As some may say "I heart Keyboards"

Wilco and Andrew Bird

Last night was one of the best concert experiences I've had in a long time. Andrew Bird opened up for Wilco at the Kc Crossroads outdoor venue. I've heard good things about this place but had never been before. My expectations were blown away. I was picturing a slab of concrete with a wooden stage. I was wrong. Its like a well kept backyard but with interesting sculptures placed throughout the area. Its not too big but still plenty of space for 3,000 people to occupy. The stage is also just as big and easy to view as any other outdoor venue I've seen. Of course, the company didnt hurt either, it was my wife and I, a co-worker and two former co-workers who are excellent people.

The opening artist Andrew Bird was very fitting. It actually felt like Fall last night. Cool, crisp and colorful. His music flowed well with that. I've only heard a few of his songs but I think seeing this gentleman play live is the best way to really get it. He's a one man band playing the violin, guitar, mandolin, glockenspiel, and some of the most beautiful whistling I've ever heard. I've searched for some videos of his live performances and I think this one below is a good example. This guy uses a multi-track system to sample and loop his own performance. He records snippets while playing his violin, then will play a "loop" of that sound while picking up the guitar or glockenspiel to play over the loop. Needless to say, he's a very talented musician and has the vocals reminiscent of Jeff Buckley.

And of course, Wilco. This was my first time to see them live and from talking to other people who have seen them multiple times....I was told last nights show was the best they've seen. Tweedy and the rest of the band were happy, smiling and even said "This is easily the best audience we've had this tour". Another comment, which is on the video below from last night's show is...."You are an infectious crowd, I didnt want to have fun tonight". I think those are pretty good compliments for an audience to receive.

Long Time No Post

I'd like to apologize to my 3-5 readers out there.....you know who you are. I haven't been a very responsible blogger lately. I've been busy with work and havent been able to set aside time for a post.

So what I have been listening too? Some good stuff. A band that I still cant get enough of (even since my last post) is The Joggers. I'm trying to ween myself off of them but nothing is working. Their album has been a sta ple while traveling and while squeezing some time in for an occaisonal run. Their drummer is a bad ass, and both guitar players are always doing something unique on each song. Give the song below a listen, it should rock your socks off....if you're wearing socks. Otherwise, it will make you want to twist the night away.

I also heard a few weeks ago the The Helio Sequence just finished their new album and currently has a release date of January 28th '08. It should be a good album to shake off some "holiday lbs" too. Also, how much has Apple spent on the Nano spots??? "1234" by Feist seems like its been playing in every commercial block...to the point that it kind of takes the focus off the product. However, I've heard of lot of people ask the question: "whats that song in the new Nano commercial?". I would be willing to guess that there isnt a large spike in Nano sales just yet, but I would be interested to know how many times this song has been downloaded on Itunes? Maybe its to drive traffic to Itunes now, and by the time Christmas comes around, those kids (without Ipods) are nagging about wanting to take their music with them. Look who just solved the Apple model....or completely bombed in trying to do so.

Either way, I do like this song but as whole, I'm just "so so" on Feist. I think she has a beautiful voice but I have to be in a very, very mellow mood to get into it. I like her more when shes with Broken Social Scene. If you havent downloaded it yet give it a listen up above.

I love finding something unexpected that takes you by surpsise. Its a Breath of Fresh Air. for a few moments I feel like I've uncovered something know one else knows about. Then, minutes later I remember its not 1999. Nowadays, the second any artist releases an MP3 the entire album has been leaked, people have already reviewed the album, and its old news. Many of the music blogs I (admitedly) visit are like this.

I'm over the constant knowing of bands that arent known by anyone yet. It becomes more of a quanity vs. quality thing. That, and I have less free time than I used to. I've been trying to only focus on stuff that actually make my ears light up.

Last night I came across a band I'd never heard of via myspace. Its the Joggers. What grabbed my attention was the intricate guitar but the way they're were able to keep an upbeat, poppy sound.

I'm sure you can tell by these pics?
